Parmi eux, Addison, un chien parlant, un ému-rafe - croisement improbable entre une girafe et un âne -, des poules qui pondent des oeufs explosifs, et un chimpanzé fantasque.
Addison leur explique que Miss Wren est partie à Londres pour tenter de libérer ses soeurs Ombrunes, capturées par les Estres. Et il leur apprend que c'est la dernière Ombrune en liberté. Jacob, Emma, Enoch, Olive, Bronwyn, Millard, Horace, Hugh décident de la rejoindre au plus vite, car elle est la seule personne capable de redonner à la directrice de l'orphelinat sa forme humaine...
